Pianosa Island

Activity: Pianosa
Area: Tuscan Archipelago (Arcipelago Toscano)
Description: Pianosa is one of the most fascinating islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.
Full of archaeological evidence and surrounded by a beautiful turquoise sea, it is peculiar for the total absence of reliefs.
It was inhabited since prehistoric times and was a place of exile in Roman times. For much of its history, however, it has been an almost uninhabited pirates refuge.
It houses impressive Christian catacombs and numerous structures, partly abandoned, linked to the prison activity that characterized it for much of the XIX and XX centuries.
Immersed in the Mediterranean vegetation, we will travel along the eastern coast of the island, exploring coves and archaeological sites.
We will visit the small town and the structures of the former Agricultural Penal Colony too.
A unique opportunity to discover this wonderful island!
Duration: full day
Elevation gain: 50 m

Mount Gabberi and Tanaccio Cave

From the Gabberi

Activity: Mount Gabberi and Tanaccio Cave
Area: Apuan Alps (Alpi Apuane)
Description: Mount Gàbberi (1,108 m), despite its modest height, is considered the “balcony” of the Apuan Alps for the view that, in the clearest days, ranges from the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago to the Maritime Alps, including all the main peaks of the Apuan range.
Before reaching the summit, we will make a short detour that will lead us to the Tanaccio Cave, a large cavern inside which there is a stalagmite sculpted in the form of a throne that perhaps had a sacral function, and where there were found burials and various lithic instruments dating back to the Copper Age.
Duration: full day

The Wave Cave

Wave Cave

Activity: The Wave Cave Ring (Anello di Grotta all’Onda)
Area: Apuan Alps (Alpi Apuane)
Description: A tour of great naturalistic and historical interest.
Going up along a creek, we will reach Grotta all’Onda (“wave cave”), a large and spectacular cavity surrounded by small waterfalls, which was inhabited almost uninterruptedly from the Neanderthal era up to recent years.
Present and characteristic inhabitants are newts and the endemic spectacled salamander.
After visiting the cave, we will resume the ascent up to the Foce del Termine and more up to the Foce del Pallone (1,080 m).
From there, in clear days, the view will range from the southern Apuan Alps to Corsica and from the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago to the Apennines.
Then the route will be almost completely downhill or on a slight slope, along the southern slopes of Mount Matanna.
Back to the starting point, it will be possible to taste local products.
